fashion inspiration – Mexico
I was always fascinated by Frida Kahlo, her art, her style, the clothes she wore…

On a trip to Mexico I went to visit her house, now a museum, in Mexico City. It’s also known as The Blue House, for the cobalt blue walls.
Inside, it is classic Mexican style with bright yellow tiles on the floor, blue and yellow furniture, traditional cookware, Mexican folk art, her memorabilia, a photo montage of Stalin, Lenin, Karl Marx, and some of her work. On her bed is a plaster corset she was forced to wear to support her damaged spine. And under the canopy is a mirror she used to paint her many self-portraits.
Recently, her husband, the painter Diego Rivera, gave the museum her famous collection of clothes, headdresses, jewellery… I was bowled over!
In Oaxaca, my favourite city in Mexico, I saw an exhibition at the textile museum, created by a local fashion college. Such creativity and imagination, as well as a perfect knowledge of craft. Very inspiring.
